Narrowboat Holiday Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Welcome to the NarrowboatHolidays.com help centre. Whether you are a first-time boater or a seasoned “cut” veteran, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about planning your perfect UK canal escape.
1. Booking & Planning Your Trip
No. You do not need a driving license or any previous boating experience. Upon arrival, our team provides a comprehensive handover, including boat-handling tuition and lock-operation training. We stay with you until you feel confident navigating.
Our all-inclusive pricing typically covers:
- Your fully equipped narrowboat.
- Bed linen and a starter set of towels.
- Full tank of fuel (diesel) and gas for cooking/heating.
- VAT and boat insurance.
- Free onsite parking for your vehicle.
Standard collection time is 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM on your day of departure. Boats must be returned and vacated by 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM on your final day to allow for professional cleaning and maintenance for the next guest.
2. Life on the Water
Narrowboats travel at a leisurely pace, generally limited to 4mph (a brisk walking pace). When passing moored boats or anglers, you should slow down to a “tick-over” speed to minimise your wash.
On the UK canal network, you can moor for free almost anywhere along the towpath (the side of the canal with the path). Avoid mooring near locks, bridges, or on sharp bends. Some “visitor moorings” in popular towns may have a small fee or time limits (e.g., 48 hours).
Yes! We are a pet-friendly narrowboat hire company. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on most of our fleet (usually up to two per boat) for a small additional cleaning fee. We just ask that they stay off the furniture and bedding.
Each boat is equipped with a 12v socket (car charger style) and most have an inverter providing 240v power (standard UK plugs) for low-wattage items like phones, tablets, and laptops. Please check with us before bringing high-wattage items like hair straighteners or travel kettles.
3. Safety & Navigation
Absolutely. Narrowboat holidays are a fantastic family experience. We provide free buoyancy aids (life jackets) for all ages, including toddlers. We recommend that children and non-swimmers wear these whenever they are on the deck or near the water.
Locks are used to move boats uphill or downhill. They are simple to operate and a highlight of the holiday for many. We will walk you through your first lock manually during your induction. It is a great way to meet fellow boaters!
Our boats feature fully equipped kitchens (galleys) with gas ovens, hobs, and fridges. You can bring your own supplies, or we can recommend nearby supermarkets. Many guests also enjoy stopping at the numerous canalside pubs located along the routes.
4. Essential Packing List
